Students will learn the basics of Journalism and prepare an actual newspaper for publication in the school.
NHA's school newspaper The R.E.A.L. Deal is managed by the students and facilitated by several faculty members. The goal is to have active participation by all interested writers. Several of the columns are devoted to specific areas: Sports, Poetry, Clubs and Events, Opinions, and Words of Wisdom (written by teachers for the students).Additionally, The Publisher's Column is written by the President and Owner, Kathleen Rosso-Gana. The students on staff participate in the newspaper class which is one of the English electives. During the first class, a list of topics/columns and a schedule of publication dates are generated and discussed; subsequently, assignments are given to each member in class. Students learn layout through QUARK software, supervised by the managing and assistant editors and teacher. Eligible students in grade 10 or higher who possess a desire to write are encouraged to take the Journalism class.
