English - Poetry

 

In this course, students will become familiar with many different styles of verse, and study an assortment of works by both American and non-American poets.   Classes will include study of different styles of poetry such as narrative, epic, dramatic, satirical, free verse, and lyrical.  Students will write poetry, as they  become familiar with the technical aspects including but certainly not limited to rhyme schemes, scansion, alliteration, and meter.  Examples of poetic forms covered during this course include:

  • acrostic                   
  • ballad
  • free verse
  • haiku
  • limerick
  • sonnet
  • quatrain
  • villanelle

Many NHA students display their poetic skills through the New Hope Academy Sonnet Contest, Chrysalis, newspaper, etc.
