New Hope Academy's Science Department also provides the opportunity for students to earn college credit by offering Advanced Placement Courses in Chemistry & Biology.  Permission to take either of these AP courses must come from the Science Department Chair and be cleared by both the Dean of Students and the student's parents.  Please note that college credit can only be  given by the student's college of choice after successfully completing the Advanced Placement Examination offered every spring by the College Board.

  • Forensic Science - This course has been designed as an introductory course in the study of forensic science.  Forensic science is the application of science to the law and involves many areas of science such as chemistry, biology, physics, and geology.  For this reason, this class is offered as an upper level science elective with a prerequisite of at least one year of biology and chemistry.  This course provides students with hands-on lab investigations of physical evidence from simulated crime scenarios.  Cases will be investigated, physical evidence collected, analyzed, tested and reported in the form of a written investigation report.  In addition famous case studies will be read and examined for types of physical evidence used for conviction or acquittal of the defendant.
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology - This course has been designed to give students an understanding of the structure and function of the human body from the microscopic examination of tissue at the cellular level to the macroscopic study of organ systems.  Each organ system of the body will be studied and include the use of actual and computer simulated organ or small mammal dissection and other laboratory exercises.  Through these and other hands-on activities students will gain an understanding of how the body maintains homeostasis under changing conditions.  Prerequisites for the course are Chemistry I & Biology I.
  • Environmental Science - This course introduces students to aspects of the environment relating to ecology, biomes, energy resources and pollution.  Students will learn more about the environment and circumstances that impact the environment.  Class field trips are an integral part of this course.  One of the units taught involved studying the biotic and abiotic factors in a local stream bed.
Physics is offered to those students who excel at mathematics, and seek to apply their skils in more practical terms.  Our science department has the capacity to make other electives available based on student needs.
