New Hope Academy

Digital Photography

There are many goals of the Digital Photography courses held at New Hope Academy.  However, the end goal is to teach the students all of the technical skills needed to shoot, edit and print digital photographs.  This is accomplished in three main stages throughout the course.

(New Hope Academy will provide a camera if the student does not own one.)

  • Skills and Techniques
Every student brings his or her camera to class during the first week of the course.  The instructor works with the students to make sure they understand their equipment, from lens adjustments and lighting considerations to export settings.  As the program progresses, students are given detailed instruction in shooting techniques, styles, and philosophies.
  • Production
After completing several instructional assignments, students are encouraged to begin working on their own projects, outside of class.  At this stage, the student has become a competent photographer and is expected to bring at least 20 images to each class for work in Photoshop and Lightroom.  Post Production will focus on professional presentation of imagery.
  • Portfolio
By the end of the course, each Digital Photography student will have a portfolio of complete, printed work.  When the students flip through their portfolios at the end of the year, they witness their own progression.  Students will be well on their way to building professional portfolios, which helps to build creative confidence.  Confidence in photographic creativity is the key that allows a student photographer to become a professional photographer.
