English

The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean; not to affect your reader, but to affect him precisely as you wish.

- Robert Louis Stevenson

Students are given many opportunities to see their work praised and published.

All students are encouraged to participate in the school newspaper, the literary magazine Chrysalis, and the annual Sonnet Contest.  Trips to professional theatrical productions are incorporated into the plan of study.

Chrysalis Literary Magazine

Critical thinking and effective communication are essential skills for success in college and throughout life.

Our English curriculum is designed to hone these skills while instilling a love of reading.  Utilizing literature from all genres, with particular emphasis on contemporary works, our teachers inspire students to find depth and meaning in literature, that in turn speaks to their lives.

We focus intensively on written expression, including

  • critical analysis
  • personal reflection
  • research writing
  • creative experimentation

We prepare students with the fundamentals for continuing education success.

The essential skills of grammar, usage and vocabulary are incorporated into each course of study to the extent required for each student.  As students advance to the higher grades, greater emphasis is placed on literature study in various genres with critical writing skills practiced regularly to prepare students for the challenge of college.
