Technology

Technology is becoming increasingly integrated into both our home and work lives.  Having strong computer skills has become essential to success.  Our Technology department works with students to help them develop proper computer skill sets including online research, typing, and common office applications.

The Introduction to Computer Technology curriculum consists of

  • History of Computers - from mainframes to today's appliances.
  • Using Word Processors
  • Building Simple Spreadsheet Applications
  • Database Design and Applications
  • Introduction to Presentation and Publishing Software
  • Introdution to Graphic Image Designs
  • Introdution to Web Site Design

For students who have shown mastery of the above basic skills, our team is there to take them further with classes on Programming, Hardware, Network Engineering and Electronics.

Programming

  • Alice - Developed at Carnegie Mellon University. Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or sharing video. Alice is a teaching tool designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming.
  • Java - The students use Eclipse, the industry standard development kit, to create Java programs. Students become familiar with Eclipse while using it to learn the Java programming language. Eclipse helps students to write, edit, test and share Java programs. Students become proficient at Java programming.
  • TI Basic - Students learn to write programs on the TI-84 calculator. Such projects teach the students about BASIC programming and strenghten the connection between math and computer science.
Hardware and Network Engineering
  • Hardware - Students take computers apart, clean the internal circuitry, and reassemble the parts. Such projects teach them about computer components and how the parts work together. Some students have repalced broken parts of computers or helped to build a computer.

  • Certification - Students have the opportunity to work towards A+ certification, according to CompTIA standards. The tests that the students could take would demonstrate their understanding of computer maintenance and troubleshooting and qualify them for certain jobs in the IT field.

  • Networks - Some students continue their studies to learn about how operating systems work, how to format and partition hard drives, and how to resolve networking issues.

Electronics

  • Students work with robotic kits and build projects that walk, roll around, light up, pick things up and make sounds. Students use breadboards to create and test circuits, while learning how various circuits work. Some students solder parts together to build robots and other machines. Fun and exciting projects motivate and encourage students to modify and expand thier projects. Field trips, games and new gadgets make this class fun and interesting for students of all ages.
